Chasing Black Bass at Baia in Papua New Guinea

For bookings and more info regarding Baia Sportsfishing Lodge click here Baia Sports Fishing Lodge. They say you lose more Bass than you catch, and after a recent 5 day trip to Baia Sportfishing Lodge in West New Britian, PNG, I would have to agree. The journey began at Port Moresbys international airport and on to Hoskins Airport in West New Britian. Across a glassy ocean we headed northwest towards the village of Baia, home to Baia Sports Fishing Lodge, a project developed as a partnership between the people of Baia and Liamo Reef Resort in 2004. As the trip commenced, the sounds of the jungle echoed throughout and a cunning looking crocodile watched us pass through his patch. It was game on, and after a decent fight I had my first PNG Black Bass in the boat. It fought hard, it was only 10lb and all I could think of was how it would feel to hook up to something ten times that weight. In the river systems of Baia, history has proven that these fish are still there and have been caught. On the other boat Veronica successfully landed a 36lb Black Bass. This would become the biggest fish of the trip. Into the night and the search for the mighty Bass continued. Suddenly the tranquillity was broken and I was on. Peeling over 20 meters of line in a few brief seconds, with drag tightened to the max, I simply could not stop this fish. I switched from aft port to starboard and in the process; the rod was swiftly snatched from my hand by this monster Black Bass. As I watched $750 of my favourite barra rod and reel being towed through the water by a 40lb Black Bass, I was starting to think that this fishing trip may have taken a turn for the worse. What followed had to be seen to be believed.   It happened in slow motion, and watching my favourite rod and reel get towed through a crocodile infested creek by a potentially record breaking fish was as slow as it gets. Our local guide Gab quickly reached for another fishing rod, and with one quick cast meters away hooked my rod and began to reel it in. As he applied more pressure, the Bass miraculously cut my 80lb leader and allowed Gab to retrieve the rod and reel. The fish was gone, the rod and reel was saved and all this took place under the cover of a dim spotlight and half a moon. My chance at a record-breaking PNG Black Bass was history, at least I still had my favourite rod and reel! It is difficult to properly describe the combination of PNG Bass on surface popper – the noise it makes, the water it displaces and the action that follows. In the space of 20 minutes, all three anglers caught Black Bass off the same snag. Every hour on the water is different at Baia, one minute you are fighting giant PNG Bass up the rivers, the next you are catching Yellowfin Tuna in the ocean, and then you get to witness all manner of marine and wildlife all under the watchful eye of the Ulawun volcano. Just when things were starting to get quiet I caught my first Spot Tail Bass, and my first PNG Bass on a popper. There is no bigger angling contrast than enjoying the peaceful sounds of the jungle meeting the ocean one minute, and hearing and feeling an explosion of power on a surface popper the next. This fish absolutely smashed the water around my popper, and with some more great boat handling, we managed to drag it out of the snag and successfully land it. After a pretty decent cast using a popper, Mat hooked onto a fish that witnesses describe as a “monster Bass pushing the 60lb mark. Yet again, the victim was his leader snapping as the biggest Bass of the trip, and possibly the year, took off with lure in mouth and leader in hand. These are fish that make you question your knots after every few casts. These are great sports fish, and in the utmost of sportsmanship, these are fair game. The target fish on this trip were Black Bass and Spot Tail Bass however plenty of other species were caught on this trip including Yellowfin Tuna, Rainbow Fish, Trevally, Cod, and some of the biggest Mangrove Jacks I have ever laid eyes on. This was an exclusive adventure and for me, will be a twice in a lifetime experience. Having now caught my first Black Bass and Spot Tail Bass, Im keen to return for more. As I see it, tenacity and tackle (the latter being the most important of all) are the necessary ingredients if one is to successfully conquer PNGs mighty Bass. This the angling adventure of a lifetime and I’ll be returning for more. For bookings and more info regarding Baia Sportsfishing Lodge click here Baia Sports Fishing Lodge.

Flashes of Silver: Barramundi Fishing in Australia’s Northern Territory

Even after travelling and fishing in Africa and the Pacific, my favourite fishing is still chasing Barramundi in Australia’s Top End. With only one week to take leave from work, I had to pick the time carefully. The aim – to travel to Darwin and fish for Barramundi, or Lates Calcarifer, at four different Northern Territory locations in the April “run-off season”.

The run-off is prime time for chasing Barramundi as the floodplains drain dumping water and food into the main tributaries. The run-off is one of the reasons why world class fishing competitions like the Barra Classic, the Reel Women’s Barra Classic, the Barra Bash and the world famous XXXX Gold Barra Nationals are held in April and May each year. Landing in Darwin I noticed a big difference since my last visit. The town centre had grown, fuel prices had gone up, and the number of recreational fishing boats around had probably tripled.

After a night’s preparation at a mates place, it was time to hit our first location – the Mary River system and a place called Shady Camp. The shade at Shady Camp is in the name only and after a 3am Monday morning start, Jason and I navigated our way down to the mouth. With no lock at the mouth it was back up to the barrage where the salt water meets the fresh. What followed was Barramundi after Barramundi caught on small soft plastic lures.

Tuesday, and 3am seemed to be the starting trend. Down to the Daly River with mates Bernd and Peter and it wasn’t long before we found the fish. Over two and a half days fishing and all on board caught plenty of Barramundi, my best a fit 82cm silver female caught on a single cast into a small movement of water well spotted and called by Peter.

Friday, and it was off to the South Alligator River where more mates Shaun and Jason joined me to fish Nourlangi Creek. Yet again we had struck run-off gold and up one small creek, we landed 8 Barramundi with the biggest up to 63cm. We kept a couple for eating and headed back to our accommodation at the Aurora Hotel.

Sunday, and the last destination was Corroboree Billabong, a location I’d never really had any luck at. Only a short drive from Darwin, it wasn’t long before Shawn, Bernd and I were amongst the Tarpon, Barramundi and Saratoga. I landed an 75cm Saratoga on a soft plastic lure dropped down between the lilies; these pre-historic fish are instinctive fighters and present the recreational angler with a lot of fun. Aside from the fishing, Corroboree Billabong is home to all manner of Australian wildlife from Jabiru birds through to large saltwater crocodiles. It is a truly beautiful place, and with that in mind, all but one of the fish we caught were quickly photographed then released to continue breeding.

You often need a holiday after taking a fishing holiday, and that was certainly the case in this instance. With four locations covered in one week, this was a hardcore trip. I lost count of the number of Barramundi caught over the week, and for that reason, next run-off season I’ll be heading back to Australia’s Northern Territory to find some more flashes of silver.

Bass2bait fishing adventures – Emu Plains NSW

We specialise in the upper Nepean River between the Penrith Weir and Warragamba Dam. We can also extend tours into the Warragamba river, this depends on the time of year however. Also we are offering tours of the Sydney International Regatta Centre (Penrith Lakes), as they have bee stocked with bass for more than 10 years now.

One of the best things about this tour is that you’re only 40mins from the centre of Sydney, but it seems like you are in the middle of nowhere.

Steve Defina is your guide and has been fishing the Nepean for many years. He loves his bass fishing and is highly skilled in the art of surface lure fishiing. Steve also truly cares for the Nepean River system and the local environment. Steve loves the area and has spent thousands of hours chasing fish in the Nepean but it does help that he lives only minutes from the River.

Bass2bait fishing adventures is also about having a great time, having a laugh, fishing and taking in the magnificent scenery. It is hard to believe that you are only just a few kilometers from Penrith, you might think you are in Kakadu (without the crocs) as it is so quiet and so pristine.

On these trips we target bass, carp, mullet, herring, eels, catfish, and even some huge gold fish. At Bass2bait we promote catch and release bass fishing just take a picture home and leave the fish to breed and grow for next time.

    Half Day Tour

The half day tour is the most popular and is a minimum of 4 hours, howeber we also do 2 hour, 3 hour and full day charters. One of the best thing with these tours with Bass2bait is that there is no wasted boat trips so you spend the time fishing.

    Sunrise Tour

Sunrise adventures start at approx 6 am from the wharf at Tench Reserve, Penrith. From there we will travel for a short distance to one of Steves fav spots and start fishing straight away.

    Sunset Tour

Sunset is my favourite time to fish and starts about 2 hrs before sunset and continues for a couple of hours after. For this tour we meet at the majestic Nepean Gorgeto hook a few big mullet before sunset. When the time is right we move to one of Steve’s favourite bass spots and catch those bass that smash the surface lures.

If you prefer we go carp fishing or chase some herring it is up to you.

We recommend just 2 passengers and Steve for the tours

    Gear

Bass2bait supplies all your fishing gear, with a choice of either the easy to use SHIMANO light spin gear or some nice overheads and baitcasters. Feel free of course to bring your own gear.

Bass2bait also supply all your lures (on a ‘you lose you replace’ basis).

ON THE FLY! We are now offering BASS FLY FISHING trips but these are ONLY for experienced fly fishers, we supply some great Bass fly’s but the rest of the equipment is up to you to bring. If you want to learn then contact and Steve can arrange to have you learn.

The boat is of a punt style with a fairly flat hull and is 4.63 mtrs long and 2mtrs wide. The boat is equipped with all the usual compliant safety gear, and has a front and rear fishing deck, with stowage underneath. The main motor is a 4 stroke 60hp Yamaha. The secondary engine is a Minn-Kota 55lb thrust electric motor, with auto pilot and so we can sneak up on the fish without scaring them away. Company Information

At Port Bouvard Charters we use Blue Lightning, a 55ft Conquest charter vessel powered by a V10 820 Doosan engine. Blue Lightning was first launched in 1993 and named First Light and was originally sent to work as a crayboat out of Fremantle. Later in 2000 it was purchased by Captain Tony Merrutio and renamed Crustacea 3. Tony cray fished the boat between Jurien Bay and Bunbury fishing 112 pots.

At the end of the 2005 crayfish season Bill and Chad Mills purchased Crustacea and renamed her Blue Lightning III and thats not the only change they made. With 18 years knowledge of the charter industry between them they went to work setting Blue Lightning up into a very comfortable and practical charter vessel which now operates between Mandurah and Dampier.. The skipper Chad Mills has had his Master Class V Ticket since early 2004 and got his Master IV ticket at the start of 2009. Due to his parents owning Mills Charters in the early days he has been involved with the charter industry most of his life.

Chad has been crewing on vessels from a very early age and the experience he has gained stands out in the way he conducts his charters. Chad has a major passion for gamefishing; he spent four years skippering a gameboat and caught his first Blue Marlin at the age of 14 and has had numerous gamefish since.

Chad has been skippering boats up and down the W.A. Coast for a number of years now and knows most of these areas exceptionally well. He is a very experienced skipper for his age and has a natural ability to deal with people.! Our deckhand is a young enthusiastic student who has just left school and is proving to be capable and likeable amongst the passengers!
